The International ScienTile Exhibition at the Zsolnay Cultural Center
Note: we have extended the deadline for submission to the ScienTile exhibit to Tuesday, May 25th.
In 2010, the Bridges conference will travel to Pécs, Hungary. Among that city's claims to fame is the world-famous Zsolnay Porcelain Manufactory, a center for historical and contemporary ceramics and porcelain. To celebrate the arrival of Bridges in Pécs, Dániel Erdély is inaugurating the ScienTile open tile design competition. Artists will submit prototype tile designs for display in an exhibition at the Zsolnay Cultural Center during the conference. A panel of judges will review the entries, and selected entries will be manufactured as prototypes by the Zsolnay. Winning entries, with the permissions from their designers, may also be considered for full commercial production.
Each artist is limited to a maximum of five entries. The tile designs should be printed in their actual sizes (maximum size 12"x12") on poster boards or other appropriate media to resemble real tiles. Each tile should be accompanied by a demonstration of its use in a complete tessellation at a maximum size of 24"x36". Here is a PDF example showing a single tile and a tessellation. The jurors will select the three best entries for special recognition.
If you would like to submit your work, please follow the instructions below. Nonconforming submissions will not be entered into the review process.
Please note that all the artworks should be sent or hand delivered to the Zsolnay Porcelain Manufactory Art Exhibition Hall by 3:00 PM on July 23, 2010. The exhibit participants are also responsible for picking up their works at the end of the conference. The artworks will not be insured while on display, so the artist assumes all risk for damage or theft.
The exhibit space will only accommodate a limited number of works, which may necessitate rejecting some good quality pieces. Review criteria include:
- Mathematical and scientific content
- Novelty and originality of the design
- Aesthetic appeal
- Craftsmanship (the level of skill and effort applied to the presentation of the prototype)
Images of any submitted artwork and accompanying descriptive data and technical descriptions (see below) should be submitted during May 1-25, 2010, to: ScienTile@bridgesmathart.org. Notification of acceptance will be made via e-mail by May 25, 2010.
Image information
Each artist is limited to a maximum of five sets of tiles. For each set, the artist should submit an image of the tiles and their associated tessellation. Images should be e-mailed as JPEG files, none larger than 2MB in size. Use RGB for color images and grayscale for black and white images. The file names should be in the format Lastnamen-m.jpg, where n is the entry number (from 1 to 5), and m is for the tiles and their tessellation for a particular n. Thus, for the first entry for John Doe, where his first entry includes two images, one from a tile and the other from its tessellation, they would be entitled Doe1-1.jpg and Doe1-2.jpg.
Artist Information and Descriptive Text
In the body of your e-mail, please include the following, including the numbers and headings exactly as shown here:
- Your first and last names, together with your title (e.g. "Freelance artist", "Associate Professor of Mathematics")
- Institution or affiliation (e.g. "None", "Physics Department, University of Arizona")
- Where you live or work (city and state or country)
- Statement about your art (150 word maximum; can include the techniques you use, why you create mathematical art, what you're trying to express with your work)
- E-mail address if you would like it to appear on your page in the exhibition website
- Your website URL if you would like it to appear on your page in the exhibition website
Then for each submission set (a submission set consists of individual generator tile(s) and an image of its (their) tessellation) include the following:
- Title of Submission number n (n = 1-5).
- Dimensions of Submission number n.
- Year of completion for Submission number n.Description Submission number n, focusing on the math content (100 words maximum)
There will be a team of jurors to review the works. They will serve two functions:
- To select the tiles and their tessellations for the exhibition.
- To select three winners of the competition from among the accepted works.
Each winner will receive a special Zsolnay Porcelain Manufactory trophy!
