About Bridges

The Bridges Organization oversees the annual Bridges conference on connections between art and mathematics. Bridges—the largest interdisciplinary conference in mathematics and the arts in the world—began in 1998 and since then it has traveled to cities in North America and Europe, and has attracted participants from over thirty countries. The conference features invited speakers, full and short paper presentations, educational workshops, a juried art exhibition, a mathematical poetry reading, and a short movie festival. MoSAIC Festivals will embody the spirit of the Bridges conference in a two-day format.

The Bridges Mission

The objectives of Bridges and the Bridges conference are to:

A Bridges conference lecture

  1. Introduce participants to innovative and integrative techniques that promote interdisciplinary work in the fields of mathematics and art.
  2. Allow mathematicians and artists who are crossing the mathematics/arts boundaries, opportunities to present their work, meet each other, and exchange ideas.
  3. Offer encouragement and inspiration to teachers of mathematics at all levels by revealing relationships between mathematical subjects and their artistic/aesthetic presentations.
  4. Provide participants with an opportunity to improve their understanding of fields and disciplines outside of their primary area of study.
  5. Offer visual displays and performances of math-related art.
  6. Produce two lasting record and resource books annually, documenting the presentations and art of the meeting, which will be available at the meeting itself and which can be widely distributed amongst educators and schools around the world.
