2018 Call for Bridges Math + Fashion Show Submissions

Announcing the first ever Bridges Math + Fashion Show at Bridges Stockholm 2018!

We are pleased to solicit submissions for what we hope will be the beginning of a regular tradition. This trial show will be quite short, and so will be highly selective in its first run. We look forward to exhibiting a variety of clothing, accessories, and jewelry.

As this fashion show is part of a professional conference, we will only accept works with substantive mathematical content that do not objectify the wearer.

Submissions for up to three items per artist/group should be sent to bridgesfashion@gmail.com and consist of the following for each item submitted.

  1. The name of the item.
  2. A description of at most 250 words for the judging committee. Your description should include sizing if appropriate, materials used, and mathematical ideas.
  3. Text of no more than 100 words to announce the piece during the fashion show itself.
  4. One or two photographs of the item for the judging committee, akin to the art exhibit catalog photos.
  5. One or two optional additional images to be projected behind the runway during the fashion show itself. For many pieces, additional images will be unnecessary, but for small items and/or items with small details that are hard to see from a stage, this offers a chance to include close-up details.
  6. The designated person in charge of the submission(s), who may be the submitter and must be attending Bridges Stockholm. We do not have funds or infrastructure to bring items to and from the conference, so artists are responsible for bringing the items themselves or designating a surrogate.

The fashion show is not connected to the art exhibition and has completely separate judging. If you have a work in the art exhibition that you would like to be part of the fashion show, we might be able to make arrangements with the art exhibit to borrow the piece for the duration of the fashion show.

The artworks will be judged on the following criteria, and curated to produce a balanced short program.

  1. Mathematical content.
  2. Craftsmanship.
  3. Innovative design.

Schedule

Submissions must be received by May 15, 2018, and decisions will be released by June 15. We look forward to your submissions, and to a fun and fascinating show!
