This year’s excursion will include a boat ride through the beautiful Stockholm Archipelago, a visit to Artipelag, a chance to explore Old Town Stockholm and purchase lunch, and a visit to the Nobel Museum

Stockholm’s Archipelago consists of over 24,000 islands, making it the second largest in the Baltic Sea. Famous Swedish authors, such as August Strindberg, have been fascinated by these islands and Björn Ulvaeus and Benny Andersson wrote most of ABBA’s songs in an island cabin.

Artipelag (a pun on “arkipelag,” the Swedish word for “archipelago”) opened in June 2012 and was designed to be in harmony with the surrounding nature. During our visit we will have the opportunity to see the exhibitionBloomsbury Spirit, and an outdoor sculpture exhibition called Detour. The forests, meadows and water provide a natural backdrop for the sculptures.

Gamla Stan (Old Town) was originally the center of the city of Stockholm, this neighborhood grew to prominence during medieval times, developing into a major trading center with German merchants. Most streets are still paved with cobblestones, with many buildings being several hundred years old. Uphill-winding streets are laid out like spokes on a wheel, ending in Stortorget, the large city square that once marked the city’s center. Besides the surrounding history, Gamla Stan is also famous for its many cozy cafés, restaurants and small shops. Though Sweden’s royal family no longer lives there, Gamla Stan is also the location of the Royal Palace, Tre Kronor, which was built in the 18th century.

The Nobel Museum opened in the spring of 2001 to celebrate the Nobel Prize Centennial. It promotes information about the Nobel Prize, the Nobel laureates and its founder, Swedish chemist, engineer and innovator Alfred Nobel (1833-1896). The main exhibition, “Cultures of Creativity,” poses the questions “What is creativity and how can creative activity best be encouraged? Which is more important to the creative process: the individual or the environment?”
