Welcome to Jyväskylä – A Dynamic City in the Heart of Finland
Conference location: University of Jyväskylä, Finland (campus map)
Address: Mattilanniemi 2, Agora building
Jyväskylä (You-was-Q-La) is a city and municipality in Finland and in the western part of the Finnish Lakeland, some 270 km north of the capital Helsinki and within good traffic connections. The city is a lively university town with about 130 000 inhabitants .The hilly and forested terrain in Jyväskylä is surrounded by hundreds of lakes.
The University of Jyväskylä has its origins in the first Finnish-speaking teacher training college, founded in 1863. Around 15,000 students are currently enrolled in the degree programs of the university.
Elias Lönnrot, the compiler of the Finnish national epic, The Kalevala, gave the city a nickname "Athens of Finland". This nickname is used to describe the major role of Jyväskylä as an educational center, and as the first place in the world to provide education in Finnish.
"The big little city" accurately describes Jyväskylä. Comfort and safety characterize the city, as well as short distances. The city offers a broad variety of services but, at the same time, everything is close at hand.
The works of the internationally recognized Finnish architect Alvar Aalto can be seen throughout the city. It is also home of the annual Jyväskylä Arts Festival.

A personal account
In addition to the detailed information above, here is a personal account from someone who visited the area a few months ago on how to reach Jyväskylä from Helsinki:
If you fly to Helsinski, once you are out of the airport, you will see the Finnair bus station behind the line of taxis. The ticket costs less than 10 euros and can be purchased as you board the bus. This bus will take you to the Helsinki Train Station, which is located in the city center. There are many hotels in this area, the closest one being Holiday Inn. You can either stay in Helsinki for a few days or head to the train station and continue your trip to Jyväskylä. The train ticket to Jyväskylä costs around 60 euros. You also can reach Jyväskylä by bus, which costs about 30 euros or less (sometimes as low as 7 Euros). The bus station is in the Kamppi station, about 3-4 minutes' walk from the train station. Have a wonderful and safe trip!
