A Day in Baltimore: Art, History, and the Chesapeake Bay
The Walters Art Museum
This museum “is one of only a few museums worldwide to present a comprehensive history of art from the third millennium B.C. to the early 20th century. Collection highlights include Egyptian mummies, Renaissance suits of armor, Fabergé eggs, Art Nouveau jewelry and old master paintings.” On our visit, we will have a presentation on The Archimedes Palimpsest, given by Will Noel, Archimedes Project Director and Walters Curator of Manuscripts and Rare Books.

The Baltimore Museum of Art
“Home to an internationally renowned collection of 19th-century, modern, and contemporary art. Founded in 1914 with a single painting, the BMA today has 90,000 works of art—including the largest holding of works by Henri Matisse in the world.” Our visit will include time to not only explore the collections and the Sculpture Garden, but we will also have lunch while at the BMA. The museum has a fine restaurant with Chesapeake Bay cuisine, plus there are other neighborhood restaurants, as well.

Fort McHenry
Birthplace of the “Star-Spangled Banner,” where the 1814 Battle of Baltimore inspired Francis Scott Key to write the national anthem of the USA . Having recently created a sculpture of Francis Scott Key, William Duffy will present a short talk and then we will tour the fort.
The American Visionary Art Museum
Considered to be one of the more unique museums in the Baltimore area, they have a philosophy that “seeks to build upon the ancient Native American Vision Quest, and other similar self-revelatory journeys undertaken by visionaries in different times, cultures, and places.”

The Maryland Science Center
Our excursion day would be incomplete without a visit to the Maryland Science, always an exciting place for educators, but with the added bonus of a special exhibit, the Math Midway, on loan from the Museum of Mathematics. As many of you know, George Hart, Bridges Conference Board member, is also the Chief of Content of the Museum of Mathematics, in New York City.

The Inner Harbor
We will complete our excursion day with an evening at the Baltimore Inner Harbor. You will have free time to visit the National Aquarium, the Maryland Science Center, the Power Plant, and many of the other attractions in the area. There are many restaurants for dinner, but you may want to consider an evening cruise on the Chesapeake Bay. As it will be a Friday night, advance cruise and dinner reservations are advised.
