Nathan Voirol, 'CAD Drafter/ Freelance Artist', Santa Barbara, CA

"My primary artistic interest is in designing repeatable patterns – I particularly enjoy creating geometric star and floral designs, which stem from my fascination with Islamic art. Over the past ten years, I have studied the structures of star patterns in order to create my own, increasingly more complex patterns. I enjoy taking traditional forms and adapting them into lesser-used symmetries and compound or invented tessellations.

My approach to art usually starts with a “what if” question concerning a different way to construct a pattern. This leads to a process of exploration and problem-solving, which may involve sketches, the use of CAD programs, and even plaster-carving or simple mold-making along the way.

I enjoy using mediums that express the modular nature of patterns well. These include ceramic tiles and silkscreen and linoleum-block prints, all of which I create by hand. I feel this brings a more organic feel to my work."
