“Mountains”

Created in the MasterPiece, an evolutionary environment (work in progress) designed by the author, 48 cm x 60 cm, 2007.

This image was created in the MasterPiece environment, designed by the author. In this environment, objects inspired in Kandinsky's Composition VIII 1923 were programmed in Java. Each image created in the MasterPiece can be considered a position in the space of all possible combinations (color, position, size, line width, shape) of the objects programmed. In this image, only BackgroundTriangle and Shade objects are used. All the characteristics of the objects are randomly generated. There are so many possible combinations that it is almost impossible that two identical compositions occur.

"Art, music and designs have been emerging from computers for many years. Recently, evolutionary algorithms have been applied to a wide range of creative design problems with such a great success that made some researchers speculate whether they modeled creativity in computers, although most commentators are very cautious and do not make such claims without some reservations. In order to discover which would be the true possibilities of this applied approach to some kind of artistic production, objects inspired in Kandinsky's Composition VIII 1923 were programmed to try the automatic creation using evolutionary techniques. Although the conceptual space, where the evolutionary search occurs, is limited to the possible variations of objects and their attributes, the number of possible combinations is huge. The developed system, MasterPiece, goes from the field of genetic algorithms and genetic programming to the mechanisms used to create potentially pleasing images."
