"Mutual Support"

Steel (powdercoated carmine red), 7", 2006.


I cut the twenty identical parts with a computer-controlled plasma cutter, assembled them with icosahedral symmetry, and had the result powder coated red. They interlock and support each other in a symmetric manner. The assembly was quite difficult, taking me several days, because it all wants to fall apart until the last piece is in place to lock everything together. No welding, brazing or other "glue" holds the pieces together. The assembly's coherence relies on mutual support.

"As a sculptor of constructive geometric forms, my work deals with patterns and relationships derived from classical ideals of balance and symmetry. Mathematical yet organic, these abstract forms invite the viewer to partake of the geometric aesthetic."
