Mary Williams

"ParaStar8"

Quilt, using cotton fabrics. Approximate size: 24" x 24". 2003.

Mary C. Williams has completed 45 quilts in 15 years. She is currently working on a Master's in Mathematics at Arizona State University.

"This design was an outgrowth from "A Collaborative Parabolic Quilt" presented at Bridges 2002 with the other author being John Sharp of England. Quilters will often take a regular 90-degree square design and use it as a 45-degree rhombus.

"The mathematical idea was the fact that a parabolic curve can be approximated by a series of straight lines. We added more lines to make up the block and developed quilt patterns from that point."
