Stanley Spencer
Amateur Mathematician and Algorithmic Artist
based in the North of England
"I am interested in the Algorithm as an Art form. The last few decades has
seen the development of Algorithmic Art. Much of it has displayed aspects of
beauty and quality not readily apparent in other Art forms. If Art is to have
some purpose then it should also promote choice, controversy, humour, or, at
least, discussion of some issue relevant to us as Human Beings. It is this lack
of Human Concern that sections of the Art World, and indeed Mathematicians themselves
have seen as a criticism of our Art. This lack of promotion of the message rather
than the medium underpins such criticism. Most of my work aims to have an element
of Human Concern as well as a display of mathematical craft."
“Non Negotiable ”
2007, Digital print, 24" x 36": including frame
This picture was created using the inverse mapping associated with the Julia Set
with a constant c= -0.39054-0.58679i. The outer region depicts the nations' carbon
footprints. The inner region depicts the consequences which, despite the wishes
of our leaders, follow directly from the science and is non negotiable.
“ The Ageing Mind ”
2007, Digital print, 24" x 36": including frame
This picture was created using the inverse mapping
associated with the Yang Lee singularities, model 1, with a constant q= -1
The outer region, formed by the repulsion of the border displays the
limited, but repetitive nature of the ageing mind. The inner region is
again repetitive but shows an arthritic hand; a metaphor for the mind
finding ideas more difficult to grasp, pick up or hold on to.
