"Chromatic Fantasy" Print

Laser print of images of woven doubleweave tapestries, 12.5" x 19.5", 2000.

"Chromatic Fantasy" is series of five doubleweave pick-up tapestries that were inspired by a piece of music that Johann Sebastian Bach wrote for the harpsichord with the same title. The five tapestries can be arranged in any order, and each one can be rotated 180 degrees. This yields 3,840 possible combinations for the five tapestries to be arranged in a line. This print is an image of one possible arrangement of the tapestries combined with that entire arrangement rotated 180 degrees.

"After completing the five "Chromatic Fantasy" tapestries and discovering that they could be arranged in 3,840 combinations in one line, I looked for ways to explore their combinations without having to move the tapestries around. I took a photograph of the tapestries and made multiple copies of it. I cut apart the individual images of the tapestries and could then freely move around the images. This led to the idea of making a "Chromatic Fantasy" Flipbook.

The Flipbook has ten stacks, with each stack containing each of ten different images-the five original tapestries, plus each of those rotated 180 degrees. With this configuration there are 10 billion possible compositions that can be created. I think of this as being a kind of visual abacus.

The creation of the Flipbook led directly into the idea of creating the "Chromatic Fantasy" video, in which images of the tapestries dance on the screen in a choreography set to the music of Bach's "Chromatic Fantasy" which inspired their creation. "
