"After completing the five "Chromatic Fantasy" tapestries and discovering
that they could be arranged in 3,840 combinations in one line, I looked for
ways to explore their combinations without having to move the tapestries around.
I took a photograph of the tapestries and made multiple copies of it. I cut
apart the individual images of the tapestries and could then freely move around
the images. This led to the idea of making a "Chromatic Fantasy" Flipbook.
The Flipbook has ten stacks, with each stack containing each of ten different
images-the five original tapestries, plus each of those rotated 180 degrees.
With this configuration there are 10 billion possible compositions that can
be created. I think of this as being a kind of visual abacus.
The creation of the Flipbook led directly into the idea of creating the "Chromatic
Fantasy" video, in which images of the tapestries dance on the screen in a choreography
set to the music of Bach's "Chromatic Fantasy" which inspired their creation.
